Job Description - Senior Pastor, English Department

The Los Angeles Holiness Church (LAHC) is an evangelical church located in the Exposition Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Established in 1921, it is one of seventeen churches in the OMS Holiness Conference of North America. LAHC is a multicultural, multigenerational church that maintains English and Japanese departments as a historically Japanese American church. It also rents to and partners with a Spanish-speaking church, Iglesia Poder del Espiritu Santo.


LAHC is rooted in God’s Word, prayer, and the fervent pursuit of God through worship and service. This foundation shapes the ministries, activities, and worship at LAHC and by God’s faithfulness, remains our legacy. LAHC’s English Department seeks a Senior Pastor who shares these values, is gifted and called to teach the Word of God, and will shepherd the congregation, provide leadership in all areas of church life and be an example for what it means to live out the gospel on a daily basis (1 Peter 5:2-3, 1 Timothy 3:1-7). The Senior Pastor is accountable to the English Department’s Board of Deacons.


The Senior Pastor’s duties and responsibilities fall into four categories as follows:

Spiritual Leadership

  • Work with church leadership to articulate a shared vision for the church and develop a plan for implementation.
  • Provide spiritual leadership and oversight to church ministries and events, supporting, encouraging and partnering with ministry leaders.
  • Ensure that the ministries are doctrinally sound and strategically aligned.
  • Pray for the church and actively participate in and support prayer meetings.
  • Encourage and support ministry leaders in developing evangelism opportunities.
  • Discern the needs of the congregation and work with church leadership to develop new ministries as needed.
  • Foster a culture of shared ministry in which members are encouraged and equipped to use their gifts.
  • Promote fellowship and cooperation with the Japanese department and the Spanish-speaking church.


Worship Services

  • Provide primary leadership in preaching, delivering biblically grounded and applicable sermons.
  • Work with the Worship and Communications Team to plan Christ-centered worship services and coordinate the key elements of worship (i.e., Communion, sermon, music ministry, fellowship, etc.).
  • Officiate baby dedications, baptisms, weddings and memorial services.
  • Lead baptism / membership classes as needed.


Equipping & Pastoral Care

  • Equip, mentor and support ministry leaders and volunteers.
  • Provide or coordinate discipleship opportunities such as Bible studies.
  • Care for congregation members experiencing significant need (crisis situations, illness, bereavement, etc.) through visitation, calls, and emails.
  • Provide counseling or counseling resources (i.e., premarital, marital, grief, etc.) as needed.
  • Ensure systems are in place for following up with visitors, infrequent attendees, and new members.
  • Invest in and engage with church members at a personal level.


Administrative

  • Supervise church staff and lead regular staff meetings.
  • Participate in and support key church meetings (i.e., Board of Deacons, Annual Business Meeting, etc.).
  • Work in partnership with the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees to:
  • Ensure legal and ethical governance and compliance
  • Responsibly manage church assets (i.e., finances, property, facilities, etc.).
  • Participate in the OMS Holiness Conference through meetings, programs, retreats, and the General Assembly.
  • Other tasks as agreed upon by the Pastor and the Board of Deacons


Other Expectations

The Senior Pastor will:

  • Meet regularly with the Pastoral Relations Committee for support and encouragement.
  • Maintain a consistent rhythm of personal study, prayer and spiritual growth.
  • Be flexible in work hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Maintain regular availability to the congregation through office hours (in-person or virtual) while modeling healthy and sustainable rhythms for ministry.
  • Be present onsite as needed.
  • Be willing to apply for ordination or acceptance into the OMS Holiness Conference Ordained Ministerial Body (OMB) to participate in Holiness Conference activities.


Requirements:

  • Ability to teach Scripture clearly and apply it to daily life.
  • Relational, collaborative leadership style.
  • Seminary degree or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years of full-time ministry/church planting experience.
  • Must be approved by the Regional Ordained Ministerial Body of the OMS Holiness Conference in addition to the LAHC Board of Deacons.
